Event Description

UPDATE 14/09/2009: The idea of a session learning more about measuring and fitting and perhaps constructing a couple of basic pattern blocks was well received so for this meet we will run with that. Bring your measuring tapes and some note paper and together we'll all figure out the mystery that is pattern drafting and fitting. I think we can all benefit from learning more about our own sizing compared to the pattern making companies ideals. There will be no more excuses for ill-fitting clothes now :) If you want to attempt a basic block some paper and cheap calico might also be handy.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It's time to start thinking about our next meet. This meet is on a Sunday to try and help other members attend and depending on feedback we may begin alternating between Saturday and Sunday each month. There are no plans for what we will get up to this meet but we'll be discussing it this Saturday and I will post more info soon. Hope to see you all there! :)

I'm longing to make some blocks for key wardrobe items so would be really interested in a measuring/fitting session

That sounds fun, I got to 'fess up to being a bit of a fitting expert/nerd. I like the idea of doing proportion charts. I have lots of long paper, and I can clear a space along a wall. The good news is, no-one is anywhere as weirdly shaped as they think, half the time it really IS the pattern's fault. Otherwise we'd all look like different species. The best bit though...someone can measure me!! I've never had a complete, accurate set.

Melissa, me too on the proportions. I always thought i was "petite" but i actually just have short legs :( It makes a difference with altering patterns.

That sounds like a great idea Vanessa. I have to admit I kind of fudge it as I go along but I would love to learn a bit more detail on the best way to measure and then how to use all those numbers! I'm sure Sandra could give us some advice too. Perhaps we can extend the idea to making a basic bodice block and get a little pattern drafting started. This croquis sounds interesting too, I have never heard of it (did a quick google) but I'd like to learn more about that too since my proportions are super crazy compared to commercial patterns.

Hi, can't make it to the second meet but i am planning on making it to the third.

An idea i have for one of our meets is to pair up and take measurements of ourselves. I have some of fitting and pattern books and a step they really stress is taking an accurate set of measurements of your body. This is something i've tried to do on my own unsuccessfully. Also making a croquis to determine our proportions.

Having problems posting links but there is info on the threadsmagazine and craftstylish websites.
